Accountable for the management and approval of all individual temperature sensitive transmission component ratings and limiting component circuit ratings, and the development, use and refinement of transmission facilities databases required to maintain NERC compliance. Work as a team with System Reliability, Electric Delivery Planning and Transmission Business Strategy to develop and maintain an integrated approach to managing our NERC ratings process compliance.

 

Project Lead Engineer-Substations  (12/11)

Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering required; P.E. with minimum (5) years of technical and commercial high voltage systems substations experience. Basic knowledge of applicable ANSI standards is required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, AutoCAD & MicroStation is a plus. This position requires the ability to clearly communicate with Customer personnel in order to success-fully collaborate, coordinate, and resolve project related activities and issues. Problems involve recognizing situations and applying appropriate concepts to solve problems that are usually short-term in nature. Good conversation skills and normal tact and courtesy are required. Travel is required; up to 30% both domestic and international.

Purpose of this position is to plan and lead the engineering of AIS and GIS substation projects. Responsible for the coordination and execution of all engineering disciplines for medium-voltage and high-voltage substation projects, both Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation projects, in the 34.5 - 550 kV range (future possibility up to 800kV) with an emphasis on project safety, cost, quality and reliability.

 

  • Manage and lead all engineering activities during the proposal, design and construction stages of substation projects with strict adherence to the project contract.  
  • Notify the Director of Engineering and the Project Manager of any difficulties encountered in the engineering and design that may adversely impact safety, reliability, quality, cost, or schedule of the project deliverables, and provide recommendations for solutions.  
  • Prepare, update and support the project execution engineering activities in the schedule with emphasis on; On-time delivery, Quality of deliverables and Project costs.  
  • Develop the Design Criteria and the Document Deliverables list for the project.  
  • Lead the development of single-line diagrams, layout drawings, raceway systems, grounding systems, station service and BOMs for substation design packages.  
  • Utilize knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code to ensure that designs comply with the required safety clearances.  
  • Perform technical, cost savings, and constructability reviews of design packages from internal engineering, outsource sub-contractor engineering and equipment factories.  
  • Generate equipment specifications, monitor vendor technical compliance and witness factory acceptance testing.
  • Experience with outdoor and indoor substation applications. Specifically on indoor applications, a good understanding of the necessary building infrastructure to support GIS is preferred (e.g. wall penetrations, embedded steel supports, overhead cranes, maintenance access, SF6 reclaimers, etc.).  
  • Experience in HV power cable system design, including ampacity calculations, cable pulling design, cable vault layouts, cable restraint design, and GIS sealing end/air termination applications, is a bonus.  
  • Solid knowledge of the benefits and strengths of GIS vs. AIS substations as they relate to reliability, space savings, safety, maintenance, security, aesthetics, life-cycle costs, etc.  
  • Provide substation project management support, including managing engineering scope according to technical contracts, equipment procurement, developing change orders, and maintaining project schedules.
